Overview
I designed a full dust jacket concept for Before the Spirits Spoke, a Victorian-inspired prequel project. The piece focuses on narrative tone, restrained illustration, and typography that feels historical without sacrificing clarity.
Challenge
Book covers have to communicate genre, mood, and shelf presence in a very small space. This project also required the full jacket system to stay cohesive across front cover, spine, back cover, and supporting copy without feeling overly literal or visually dated.
Audience
The intended readers are people drawn to historical fiction, mystery, and character-driven stories. The cover needed to signal atmosphere quickly while still feeling readable and contemporary enough for today’s audience.
Approach
I began with story and theme research, then translated those insights into silhouette-based imagery, type choices, and a muted palette. I treated the jacket as a full system from the start so the wrap would feel intentional across all surfaces, not just on the front.
Solution
The final design pairs a limited Victorian-inspired palette with clear hierarchy and a unified illustration style across the full wrap. Front, spine, and back work together as one production-ready concept with consistent tone and stronger visual coherence.
Outcome
Stronger genre signaling, better shelf recognition, and a clearer demonstration of how I handle long-form print details beyond a single cover image. I wanted the cover to feel atmospheric and composed, not crowded. The best book jackets invite curiosity while still doing the practical work of guiding the reader.
